Now major tech companies like Intel are taking cues from Steampunks and looking at ways to make their devices have humour, humanity and history.

It's May in the English city of Lincoln—a bright sunny day. People have taken to the streets in their finery: men with their top hats and cravats and women in corsets and feathered bonnets. It's the very image of Victorian Britain. Until, that is, you notice the giant brass insect wings protruding from the backs of several well-dressed ladies.

Welcome to The Asylum—billed as one of the largest Steampunk festivals in Europe.

Among the gathering is a Russian tourist in a black topper and knee-length leather boots. Her name is Margarita. A.F.

AUSTRALIAN TRADITIONAL CAROLS


Written more than 50 years ago by:

they capture the essence of the Christmas season in Australia - the weather, the birdsong, and all the other sounds of summer - whilst maintaining the intrinsic Christmas message, the birth of Jesus Christ.

It seems almost impossible to buy a complete recording of these carols. The one I have, by the Adelaide Singers, is on a 12 inch LP 1969. If anyone does manage to find a newer version, I would love to hear about it. The written words alone give no inkling of the lilting, joyful melody so befitting of the Australian summertime.

"Drinking Alcohol Damages Teenagers’ Brains"

Drinking in adolescence harms brain development. Consuming alcohol before age 21 causes permanent brain damage. Underage drinking retards mental development.

Agencies warn us that:
“Research indicates that the human brain continues to develop into a person’s early twenties and that exposure of the developing brain to alcohol may have long-lasting effects on intellectual capabilities.”

“Exposing the brain to alcohol during this period (i.e. before age 21) may interrupt key processes of brain development” and “alcohol–induced brain damage may persist.”

“The brains and bodies of teens are still developing, and alcohol use can cause learning problems.” Private interest and activist groups assert that:
“Drinking before the age of 21 can cause irreversible brain damage.”
“There is growing evidence to suggest that alcohol use prior to age 21 impairs crucial aspects of youthful brain development” “alcohol can do long-term and irreversible damage to critical neurological development that is ongoing during the teen-age years and continues until age 20.” Research “shows the human brain doesn't stop growing until about age 21 or 22, and that alcohol consumption can alter or retard that growth, including memory and test-taking ability.”

History
Bakery was formed in Perth at the start of 1970. Regarded as one of the leading "underground" groups of their day, they are remembered for their superb debut album Momento, the innovative Rock Mass for Love LP and the powerful single "No Dying In The Dark".
The original lineup was John Worrall, "wild-haired guitarist" Peter Walker (ex-Jelly Roll Bakers), Mal Logan (ex-The Rebels), Eddie McDonald and Hank Davis. McDonald and Davis were both ex-members of the NZ Avengers.
In the words of encyclopedist Vernon Joyson, Bakery's work:
"... blended hard rock and country with jazz using complex arrangements. Their main strength was the variety of their music which could switch from gentle acoustic passages to booming heavy progressive assaults on the senses within the same song."
Regrettably, like most of Astor's locally-recorded output, neither of the Bakery albums has ever been officially released on CD, which is a great shame, as Momento certainly ranks as one of the strongest and most accomplished Australian rock albums of the period.
Bakery continued gigging until their split in February 1975, but regrettably they made no more commercial recordings.
